Capital City Shooting - My First 'blog'
I'm not really a writer, I scraped an English Lit GCSE at school so excuse my grammar and punctuation... This is my first 'blog', I'm typing what I think as I look through my photos so I hope it makes sense :)
So a weekend away... An hour on the train and we're (My Wife & I) at Euston... We pop outside to wait for our weekend tour guides and hosts, Becky friend SJ & her partner Ted...
It's gotta 25 decrees, packed with people and the sun is shining... The weather for the weekend is set to be great... Wicked! The waiting area outside Euston is a sweet spot for people photography simply due to the amount of people from all over the place... Lots of interesting people with interesting things to hand... For this trip I left the DSLR at home and only packed my compact Fuji x100s and Olympus OM-10 with a 28mm lens... I was so close to taking the DSLR but decided against it to save on weight and focus more on shooting rather than gear...
Back underground, SJ & Ted arrive to meet us... I love the tube... I could spend a day strolling the underground shooting... The architecture, lines and symmetry are sweet... The rush of people and flow of air... It amazes me that they ever dug the underground network... Maybe it's just a novelty to me... Birmingham has no underground like this and the Londoner's seem to enjoy it as much as me!
Back off the Tube and out into the sun... We went to Burough Market for lunch as it was right next to The Shard, for which we had tickets to visit... This has to be one of my favorite places to visit in London... Amazing Food, amazing atmosphere and a real good feel about it...
After lunch we wondered over to the shard... Two very fast lifts, and 72 floors later we were at the top... The views were great, but shooting land/cityscapes aren't really my thing... I like shooting people, daily life and things we see every day but fail to really look at... So whilst everyone was shooting out, I was either shooting them or shooting up!
Feet back on the ground... London is a great city... The architecture is great, and the people make for great subjects... Sometimes I wish my Fuji x100s went a bit wider than 35mm though as I found myself pulling out the old Film Olympus with the 28mm... For me 35mm is a great all rounder... Preferably I'd like a 28 and a 50 but that's not practical on the street so I suppose a 35 sits nicely in the middle... I will be interested to see what Fuji bring out over the next few years and may invest in an interchangeable lens setup if they can deliver on a decent Auto Focus system... As I find my own style I realize I'm drawn towards shooting symmetry, leading lines and people, of which London in in abundance and the x100s hold its own...
Overall I am glad I stuck with a fairly light weight and compact camera set up for the weekend... Sure I wished I had my DSLR with a standard zoom a few times but in the grand scheme of things I think the 35mm focal length of the x100s is the perfect all rounder for city shooting...
